The village of Burgau nestles behind a picture book cove. A band of golden sand stretches between the cliffs of two rocky headlands. This is a romantic place and few are not captured by its magic.
Behind the beach fishermen pull their boats up onto the slipway. The streets are narrow and steep and laced with narrow lanes and steps.
In the evening the air hangs with the aroma of fresh fish being grilled by cottage doorways. Later you can join the village people as they stroll in the cool evening air.

Today Burgau achieves a delicate mix of reserved resort and traditional Algarve life.
Fishermen still leave the beach each night to fish by lamp light in their little boats whilst visitors explore the delights of the local restaurants.

To the west of the village the countryside is protected by a national park and the cliff top path wanders through unspoilt countryside.
Follow the path for 3 miles past the crumbling remains of an ancient fort to arrive at the charming bay of Boca do Rio. The views along the route are spectacular and pass the beach of Cabanas Velhas.

Throughout the day there are bus services from the village to Lagos, but this is an area best explored by car. The Algarve has some of the best value car hire in Europe.
